This month, the University of Calgary’s Presidential Task Force on Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Accessibility (PTF-EDIA) is launching a series of community engagement activities to support the development of its inaugural EDIA strategy and action plan. During the months of February to April, the PTF-EDIA invites UCalgary’s campus community to provide their input on EDIA through a variety of activities and venues.

A transdisciplinary team of UCalgary researchers wanted to know why homes in rural communities often have a much higher concentration of radon than homes in urban areas. Researchers from the disciplines of medicine, science and architecture looked at the geophysical makeup of areas, the style of home as well as unique features on or near the property.

Meet Julia and Renna from Spatial and Numeric Data Services (SANDS) at the TFDL! They can help you find maps, air photos, and data for your course work and research! Their data collection includes open and licensed data. One example is the Digital Aerial Survey (DAS) data which contains many surface features, from curbs and gutters to light poles manholes in the City of Calgary. If you need data, explore their thematic data catalogue.
If you don’t see what you need, email them at [email protected] with the features/dataset, area, date, and file format you need. If they send you a data license agreement, remember to read and follow the terms carefully.

SCHOLARSHIP AND AWARD OPPORTUNITIES

ESRI Canada GIS Scholarship 2024 Undergraduate & Graduate
The Esri Canada Higher Education Scholarship award recognizes excellence in the academic achievement of University of Calgary undergraduate students who use geographic information systems (GIS) within their program of study. The award is sponsored by Esri Canada, and students must demonstrate how the use of Esri technology (e.g., ArcGIS Platform) has significantly contributed to a recent project they completed as part of their coursework or research. One award is available to an eligible UCalgary student each year—this award competition will determine who the University of Calgary will nominate to Esri Canada to receive the award.

For students entering first year of a Master's Degree program in the School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape (SAPL) at the University of Calgary in the upcoming Fall, who intend to incorporate a respect for practical holistic problem solving into their studies and profession as an architect, planner or landscape architect.

The Community Planning Association of Alberta (CPAA) is offering 3 scholarships, worth $500 each. To apply, please develop a poster (size 11X17 inches) that focuses on CPAA’s theme of this year’s conference: “Beyond Municipal Borders: Collaboration for Vibrant Communities”.

This scholarship is intended to provide monetary assistance to students for tuition, research, books or other academic expenses. A maximum of three (3) scholarships will be granted at $2,000 each. One award may be given to an Undergraduate degree student and two awards may be given to Masters degree students.
The APPI Student Conference Award provides monetary assistance to students attending and participating at an approved conference. A maximum of two (2) awards will be granted at $2,000 each. One award may be given to an Undergraduate degree student and one award may be given to a Masters degree student.

RAIC Foundation Scholarships
This award is open to students in the last two years of a professional degree program in a registered school of architecture anywhere in Canada, or in Part III of the RAIC Syllabus Program. Each school can select up to two (2) students to apply for this scholarship. Faculty should coordinate to ensure only two entries are submitted per school.
Full-time students who have been registered in a Master’s degree program leading to a professional degree in architecture at one of the accredited University Schools of Architecture in Canada or the RAIC Syllabus during the calendar year (2022 - 2023) in which the award is being made are eligible to apply.

The CAA Student Award will recognize the work of students in Years 1-3 which creatively addresses issues associated with social, economic, and environmental well-being in the context of the current biodiversity crisis and climate emergency.
The CAA President’s Award will recognize the work of students in Years 4, 5 & 6 which critically and creatively addresses the issues associated with social, economic, and environmental well-being in the context of the current biodiversity crisis and climate emergency.
The deadline for both the awards are Friday, May 31, 2024.

The Canadian Architecture Student Association (CASA-ACÉA) would like to celebrate the excellence of our Canadian architecture students who have continued to design this past year. CASA-ACÉA is calling for work to showcase at the 2024 RAIC Conference in May in Vancouver to continue our efforts to profile student work to potential employers, colleagues, and the public. Design Camp is currently seeking Instructors for this summer's camp season. The successful candidates will have the opportunity to design and execute activities that provide ample opportunity for campers to bring their visions to life. The Southeast Regional Service Commission (SERSC) is seeking bilingual candidates with a Bachelor or Master’s degree in Planning or related field for a full-time Planner position. You would join our multidisciplinary team in guiding development and providing local, regional, environmental, and recreational planning services to our partner municipalities and services districts in New Brunswick’s fastest growing region.
