The Avant-Garden is a Graduate Student Group committed to enhancing the campus experience through landscape beautification, communal placemaking, and collaborative learning. Right now, we’re taking neglected planter boxes on campus and designing their planting and growing conditions to support beautiful, low-maintenance, pollinator-friendly landscaping. In the future, we hope to expand these operations, support independent research projects, and facilitate outreach and educational events. We imagine a campus where every member actively shapes their spaces for connection, sustainability, vibrance, well-being, and a shared sense of pride. Avant-Garden is not just a group, it's a movement toward a campus community that collaboratively imagines and shapes its future.
If you'd like to be a part of helping us grow, we currently have many volunteer opportunities.

Jinmo Rhee – SAPL assistant professor, recently had one of his peer-reviewed articles was published in publication in the journal of Environment and Planning B: Urban Analytics and City Science (EPB).
The paper "An inductive method for classifying building form in a city with implications for orientation" is published. This paper explores the role of deep learning in analyzing building forms. Central to this study is the debate on whether the orientation of buildings, shaped by a city's unique environmental, social, and cultural contexts, should influence architectural classifications. Employing a detailed dataset and a case study from Montreal, the research examines buildings with varying orientations to understand how these aspects reflect and define urban identity. This work not only advances building form analysis but also encourages a reimagined understanding of our cities' architectural landscapes. Additionally, this paper is nominated for the Breheny Prize, which will be awarded to a best paper in EPB.

Congratulations Jinmo!
