Competition and Culture:
Discussions on the economics of news media and mergers in Canada
Discussions on the economics of news media and mergers in Canada
News media plays an undeniably important role in culture, society, and democracy. Canada is one of the most highly concentrated media markets globally, with vertically integrated firms controlling more than 55% of the market. While Canadian policymakers and journalists have long lamented the steady decline of Canadian news media, the resulting policy decisions have tended towards treating symptoms rather than identifying causes. An oligopoly structure in this industry may or may not be unavoidable due to fundamental economic forces; however good policy in this space requires a frank understanding of what is causing the decline.
Panelists will discuss the critical role that media plays in Canadian society and the changing economics of news media in Canada, including the structure of competitive forces and how that affects the types of media outlets that succeed and fail. The panel will also analyze Bill C-18 (The Online News Act), the competition bureau's approach to media mergers and respond to audience comments and questions.
