My GradSkills Updates
To Our Graduate Students:
As we come to the end of the Fall 2020 term and start looking ahead to 2021, the leadership and staff at the Faculty of Graduate Studies want to wish you a very restful and enjoyable holiday season. As much as possible, please take this opportunity to unplug, unwind, and focus on your well-being. We've all been through an exceptionally challenging year, and at FGS we recognize the determination and resilience that our students have shown. We also recognize that the stresses of the pandemic have meant that some of you are not where you hoped to be in your studies. Some of you have young families, or aging relatives to look after. Some of you may have had to face this serious illness head-on. Please know that we understand the unique challenges that 2020 posed, and remember that we're here to support you as we look forward to the promise of a new year.
Season's greetings, and best wishes for 2021!
Robin Yates, on behalf of the leadership and staff at FGS
Reminder: COVID-19 Restrictions in Effect Dec. 13-Jan. 12
Effective December 13, 2020, new COVID-19 restrictions announced by the Government of Alberta will be in place. These restrictions may impact graduate students in the following ways:
Graduate students are expected to work from home, except in the case of research-based students who must be on campus in order to access laboratories, studio spaces or other facilities that provide equipment necessary to the student’s research. When it is not necessary for you to be on campus, you should work remotely.
Students who continue to conduct research on campus must do so in compliance with and included in up-to-date and approved workspace safety plans. Please ensure you have reviewed and comply with your workspace safety plan.
Library and Cultural Resources (LCR) facilities, including the Taylor Family Digital Library (TFDL), will close. LCR will continue to offer a pick-up service for students who require physical resources.
For students planning an oral exam during the period affected by the new restrictions, if you have booked a room in the TFDL for the exam, we have confirmed that you can use the room.
Please take note of the following general restrictions. As of December 13, 2020:
The fitness centre, pool and recreational facilities will close.
All Active Living group programs are suspended.
The University Athletics suspension first announced on Nov. 26 will continue.
Study spaces outside of libraries will remain open to solo study only.
Group studying is not allowed except in situations where two or more students must be physically present for the purpose of practice or a practical activity. Students should opt for virtual study groups instead.
If two or more students must be physically present to practice a specific activity, the students should stay 2 metres apart from one another at all times and be masked.
Students who must come within 2 metres of each other for practice, rehearsal, or study must wear a mask, even if they are outdoors.
Performance practices and rehearsals can occur; however performances, concerts, and inter-school performance activities are not allowed at this time.
Streaming a live performance for an exam is permissible if there is no live audience involved.
No social gatherings in indoor workplaces, such as lunchroom gatherings, are allowed.
Until further notice to the contrary, food courts will only be permitted to provide take out, there will be no use of tables and seating permitted.
