Dear colleagues,

The month of June has seen many researchers return to their workspaces under the Expanded Research Designation (ERD). In spite of the current situation, the University of Calgary has maintained our tradition of supporting undergraduate summer students. Many students are working virtually, and those who are able to be productive in this setting can and should continue to do so.

At the request of faculty members, we have decided that undergraduate summer students will now be eligible for consideration under Expanded Research Designation. This new development is an opportunity for your students to join your team on campus if it is safe to do so and they consent to return to in-person activities.

Currently:

  • Even as campus begins re-entry, we ask you to continue working from home wherever possible.
  • A research exemption is required for researchers to operate on campus. Please do not return to campus before you receive an email from the VPR office confirming that you have an approved Critical or Expanded Research Designation.
  • Those who receive an approved Expanded or Critical Research Designation must complete the Workspace Safety Plan.
  • All who are returning to campus must adhere to the UCalgary COVID-19 Re-Entry Protocols.

Next:

  • Undergraduate Summer Research Studentships are now eligible for consideration under Expanded Research Designation. This includes undergraduates who have not yet received lab training:
    • The supervisor must ensure their summer student meets the eligibility requirements, and submit an Expanded Research Designation application.
    • A new application must be submitted to add a new student, even if the supervisor already has an approved ERD.
    • All supervisors who receive an approved ERD must complete the Workspace Safety Plan. This plan must include a description of safety precautions specific to up-close training and guidance.
  • The Workspace Safety Plan is now available online via SharePoint:
    • If you have an approved Critical or Expanded Research Designation, and you have not yet completed a Workspace Safety Plan (either online or word doc), please complete this plan now.

Please visit the Guidance for Researchers website for up to date information about research operations.

Thank you all for your continued cooperation, patience, and perseverance through this challenging situation. While restrictions ease in our province and on our campus, we must continue to be vigilant.

Stay organized, plan ahead, and stay safe. If you have questions or comments, please contact us at [email protected].

Sincerely,
Dr. William Ghali
Vice-President (Research)
