Containment and Monitoring Institute

Feature: Containment and Monitoring Institute Field Research Station

The Containment and Monitoring Institute (CaMI) is a partnership between CMC Research Institutes and the University of Calgary's Global Research Initiative.

The site is a 200-hectare active, small-scale CO2 injection site where researchers are advancing monitoring technologies to advance carbon capture and storage as a key solution for industries to achieve goals of net zero emissions by 2050. The station provides facilities and equipment to test and develop measurement and monitoring technologies to track CO2 stored underground, and to determine the detection threshold of CO2 at shallow to intermediate depths. Research at the station allows technology developers to advance the commercialization of carbon storage, will inform best practices in CCS monitoring technologies and will help industry better understand the movement of fluids underground.

The site is also home to a methane emissions detection centre with a dual frequency comb laser spectrometer, Picarro cavity ring-down spectrometer and optical gas imaging camera which provide continuous and intermittent detection and emissions quantification over a seven square kilometre area.

Female Researchers Present Digital Poster at the Logic 2020 Conference

As a group of female postdoctoral fellows and research associates interested in “leaning in” to advance their careers and help others take the steps to advance theirs, joined together to organize a workshop at the University of Calgary. The Future Faculty Workshop for Women in Science and Engineering was open to graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and research associates from the science and engineering faculties. As a result of this workshop, a community of support and mentorship amongst the female graduate student, postdoc, and research associate population on campus was developed, providing support to women in STEM on campus, and creating a community of women supporting women.

Speakers included female leaders from around campus, including the dean of science, assistant, associate, and full professors, health and wellness experts, and career development mentors, provided insight into what it takes to become a female faculty member. Their talks were personal and they answered audience questions with enthusiasm, kindness, and support. This event advanced the women in STEM community’s perception of themselves as part of the larger UCalgary community.
