Dear colleagues,

As part of the University of Calgary return to campus, the Biogeoscience Institute will resume research activities at a reduced capacity in August 2020.

Beginning Aug. 4, University of Calgary researchers may request accommodation and lab access at the Barrier Lake Field Station. Access to the R.B. Miller Field Station and Sheep River Site remains suspended.

Access and accommodation are being offered as follows, in compliance with University of Calgary COVID-19 workspace safety guidelines:

  • On-site accommodations will be limited to one person per unit.
  • Access to shared spaces, including the laboratory, must be pre-arranged with BGI staff to prevent over-crowding and allow for cleaning between users.
  • Food service and shared dining facilities will not be available; users are to prepare all meals in the kitchens of their housing unit.
  • Users are required to follow all UCalgary COVID-19 Re-entry Protocols, including wearing non-medical masks in indoor public spaces, maintaining physical distance, washing your hands often, and self-isolating immediately if you feel ill.
  • Enhanced cleaning protocols will be followed throughout the station.

Resuming activities at Barrier Lake Field Station will enable researchers, postdocs and graduate students to return to data collection or research programs that require access to the station. If researchers are able to conduct their activities from home, we ask that you continue to do so.

Next steps

If you wish to access Barrier Lake Field Station:

  • Request access by contacting Adrienne Cunnings, Field Research Manager, at [email protected].
  • Secure all standard departmental approvals for field work, including the Field Level Hazard Assessment. Note that Critical or Expanded Research Designations are not required at this time to access Barrier Lake Field Station.
  • Station safety protocols will be provided when access is confirmed.

We are committed to the safety of our campus community and ensuring that our return to campus proceeds safely and efficiently. Thank you for your continued cooperation and patience.

If you have questions or comments, please contact us at [email protected].

Sincerely,
Robert I. Thompson
Associate Vice-President (Research)
