Students, trainees, faculty and staff,

I am honoured to share that Drs. Lynn McIntyre, MD, and Judy Birdsell, PhD, have been appointed to the Order of Canada. Both members of the O’Brien Institute for Public Health, they have made significant contributions to improving health care, research and public health policy and are wonderful representatives of the Cumming School of Medicine (CSM). Return to campus

  • A reminder to any CSM faculty and staff entering Alberta Health Services (AHS) facilities, including the McCaig Tower, please ensure that you have UCalgary ID with you. Security may turn away people who do not have their UCalgary ID. As well, you may be asked to replace a cloth mask with a procedure mask.
  • The university has announced a change to the seasonal closure this year. It will begin at the end of the day on Tuesday, Dec. 22, 2020 and normal operations will resume on Monday, January 4, 2021. For those who are required to work on Dec. 23 and 24, we extend a special thank you for the important work you do. Please connect with your manager or department head to identify time to take two paid days off in lieu.
  • The Provost’s Office sent an update after the Government of Alberta declared a state of public health emergency Nov. 24 and announced new restrictions within the province because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The update includes information related to face coverings, classes and exams, and working from home. Read more.

Learning and working

  • The CSM and AHS are looking for your input to better understand the childcare needs of staff, physicians and learners at the Foothills campus. An anonymous online survey, open until Dec. 6, has been developed to learn more about the current and foreseeable childcare needs of the CSM community.
  • There are free online learning workshops taking place in December through the Health Sciences Library. You can get more information by contacting the library at [email protected]. Read more.

Awards and recognition

  • Dr. Valerie Taylor, MD, PhD, and Dr. Fiona Clement, PhD, were named this week to a list of Canada’s 100 Most Powerful Women. The list was compiled by the Women's Executive Network, a national organization the celebrates that advancement of women. Read more.
  • I am pleased to share the news that Dr. Jean Addington, PhD, has been named a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada. Read more.
