Compassion is Critical to Care The level of compassion a patient receives best determines their perception of the quality of care, a group of researchers led by Dr. Shane Sinclair have found. The findings of their report, which surveyed 4501 patients of emergency departments in several hospitals across Alberta, are a break from what are traditionally believed to be the main drivers of quality — the length of wait times, how clinical information is collected or dispensed, or the ease of the discharge process — though they’re all important, said Shane Sinclair. |
Dr. Sinclair is also the founder and director of the Compassion Research Lab.
The Compassion Research Lab is committed to putting compassion back where it belongs, at the heart of healthcare.

Are You Interested in Improving Suicide Training for Physicians?
The Department of Psychiatry invites attending physicians and pediatrics residents to participate in interviews discussing their experiences with suicide intervention training. The goal is to understand what works in preparing physicians and residents for working with suicidal patients in clinical settings and to identify what should be included in suicide intervention training for physicians in the field.
Participants will receive a $50.00 VISA gift card for completing a 30- to 60-minute interview about their experiences with suicide intervention training and working with suicidal patients. These interviews will be conducted virtually and can be scheduled to accommodate busy schedules. If you are interested in participating or have any questions about the study, please email [email protected]. This study has been approved by the University of Calgary Conjoint Health Research Ethics Board (CHREB) - REB23-0407. |

Department of Pediatrics and AHS Antimicrobial Stewardship Program Dr. Peter Jamieson, AHS CMO and VP Quality announced the launch of a province wide antimicrobial stewardship initiative at the end of May. We are pleased to announce the launch of Alberta Children's Hospital's antimicrobial stewardship program under this umbrella which will operate year-round starting September 1, 2024. This program will be spearheaded by Dr. Carsten Krueger, infectious diseases consultant and medical lead for pediatric stewardship in southern Alberta, as well as Trevor Toy, newly minted stewardship pharmacist and long-time pediatric hospital medicine pharmacist at ACH. We will need your help and support to optimize antimicrobial stewardship practices across the Department of Pediatrics. As the program rolls out, Dr. Krueger and Trevor Toy will connect with your section to help identify areas of improvement and co-develop strategies for optimizing antimicrobial use together with you. - Dr. Antonia Stang, Dr. Carsten Krueger and Trevor Toy |

Changes to Downloading and Printing AHS Files on Personal Devices
AHS is accountable to maintain the privacy and confidentiality of Albertans and the privacy of our organization’s information. To prevent sensitive data from inadvertently leaving our environment, starting on September 30, 2024 staff and physicians will no longer be able to use their personal PC/Mac devices to download or print AHS files from their OneDrive or SharePoint Online folders.
Please note that viewing and editing files are not impacted. By using multi-factor authentication, all staff and physicians will still be able to view and edit their OneDrive/SharePoint Online files from any device - laptop, home computer, or mobile device - but the download and print functions on personal devices will be disabled for AHS files. We recognize that a small percentage of AHS staff and physicians will still need to download or print AHS files from a personal device, and they may be eligible for an exemption from this restriction. An exemption may be granted only if the required workflow cannot be performed within the AHS Microsoft environment. Examples of exempt workflows may include the following: Sharing large documents with external entities (universities, conference organizers, research agencies, etc.) Downloading data to use with software not available at AHS.
Users who require the download or printing functions on their personal computers are asked to use the IT Access Request Form (ITARF), outline the rationale for the exemption request and answer a few questions regarding the privacy implications. Visit Insite to learn more about the change to Microsoft Web Applications and the overall Microsoft Technologies Program. Thank you for your ongoing support. |

AHS Microsoft 365 Licenses In 2023, Microsoft 365 introduced a new licensing model to AHS. Information Workers with assigned computers (i.e., admin) will receive full access to the MS 365 license package, while Deskless Workers will have access to web-based apps only. Currently, 80% of AHS staff are Deskless Workers, and 20% have dedicated devices. Web-based access limitations mean certain documents (e.g., fillable forms, advanced Excel spreadsheets, macros) will not be compatible for Deskless Workers. |
