Collecting Books to Support Early Literacy
The Owerko Centre’s Little Red Reading House is co-organizing the annual Calgary Reads big book sale and is currently collecting like-new books at the Starbucks on the 4th floor until Thursday, May 2nd.
This event helps us to fuel important early literacy work in our community through the Little Red Reading House.
The UCalgary Little Red Reading House has distributed well over 46,000 books into the community since January 2023 through community-serving agencies.

The consultant engaged in this process will present the findings and invite discussion about whether or not they resonate with you, and what might be missing from the preliminary engagement. This is an excellent opportunity to highlight both section specific needs and also overarching opportunities for the Department. A summary of the section engagement sessions will be completed and used to inform a leadership strategic planning retreat on Friday, May 10, 2024. Looking for Preceptors to Take Shadowing First Year Medical Students Dr. Theresa Wu, head of Block 2 UME is looking for preceptors willing to take shadowing first year medical students for a “Career Exploration Week”. If you are willing to have a student observer for one week, please contact Dr. Wu at [email protected]
There is a lot of interest in pediatrics for our first-year medical students! We are looking for sections or individuals who are willing to take students for Career Development Week. These are students who would have just completed their first year of pre-clerkship. The weeks include:
- June 24-28
- July 1-5
- July 8-12
- July 15-19
Attendings are given $125/student per week. The expectations are that students would attend clinical work 4-5 days, or 30-40 hours for the week. |

Student Poster Award Winner: Christine Lukac
Christine Lukac, PGY-3 supervised by Dr. Jim Kellner, MD has won the Student Poster Award at the AMMI Canada - CACMID Annual Conference. Their research and poster "Impacts of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic on the seasonal pattern of hospitalizations for acute respiratory diseases among children in Alberta, Canada" concluded that, "the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic had significant impacts on the pattern of pediatric hospitalizations for ARD".

Join us this April for our free EDI in Pediatrics Course! This self-guided learning opportunity aims to provide trainees and physicians with education and resources related to equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) and the pediatric population. Themes covered:
- Introduction to EDI and Cultural Humility
- Social Determinants of Health
- Disparities & Inequities in Neonatal, Infant & Child Health
- Community Health of Specific Populations
What to expect: Beginning April 1, 2024, registrants will be emailed resources each weekday in a Read, Watch, Listen, and Engage format to allow them to actively engage in this material in whatever capacity they see fit. Participants are not required to finish every activity, but we encourage daily learning by choosing 2 or more resources to engage with. Resources will be listed added to the Course Webpage each weekday (AAP member login required). About our evaluation: Your participation in this course is voluntary. However, if you would like to embark on this course, we will ask that you complete a questionnaire before and after completion of the course. Your responses are anonymous and will be used for research purposes only to assess how effective the curriculum is in accomplishing our goal. All data will be aggregated and no names or personally identifying information will be collected or published. Only AAP staff who are involved with the program and project investigators will have access to the data. Participants must be 18 years of age and older to participate. Credit Statements: The American Academy of Pediatrics is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
