Machine-learning tool increasing accuracy of diagnosis in Parkinson’s disease

New tool uses less processing power over shorter period of time to provide more accurate results. Local Topological Recurrence Analysis (LoTRA) applies machine-learning approaches to examine data from those individuals living with movement disorders, such as Parkinson’s Disease. Read more here.

Searching for the brain's quantum network

Researchers are starting to piece together tantalizing bits of evidence that the human nervous system uses light for information processing. Modeling by Dr. Christoph Simon, PhD, and colleagues' indicated that the myelin sheath surrounding axons that connect human nerve cells, has a high refractive index. Read more here.

Research projects brighten lives and boost health of kids during COVID

New federal funding will support researchers as they address mental well-being of children, youth, and their families in Canada. Seven UCalgary projects received over $1 million in CIHR Operating Grants. Read more here.

Weston Family Foundation funds $12M initiative to advance the science of healthy aging

The Weston Family Foundation is awarding a $12-million research grant to the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging (CLSA) hosted at McMaster University. A brain scan collection will be coordinated by the Calgary Image Processing and Analysis Centre (CIPAC) and CIPAC will house the MRI database. Several hundred Calgarians will participate in the study, which is led in part by HBI members Dr. Eric Smith, MD and Dr. David Hogan, MD. Read more here.

The Department of Physiology and Pharmacology and the Hotchkiss Brain Institute with the support of the Alberta Children’s Hospital Research Institute invite applications for an appointment with Tenure at the Professor level.

The selected candidate will be nominated for a Canadian Institutes for Health Research (CIHR) Tier I Canada Research Chair (CRC) in Brain Circuits.

Applicants must have a PhD (or equivalent), be a Full Professor (or eligible for promotion to this rank) and have an outstanding record of research productivity with publications in high impact journals and demonstrated success in the acquisition of external research funding and awards. The applicant must also meet the requirements outlined for the Canada Research Chair at the Tier I level.

Science to Policy Accelerator (S2PA) Program

The pilot program will welcome up to 25 early-career researchers from across Canada (i.e. individuals with a PhD in any discipline, or a Master’s with at least three years of research experience). This demographic will benefit from specialized skills training, as their expertise and ongoing research position them as key knowledge brokers and emerging leaders at the science-policy interface.

The CSM is seeking nominations for the new Staff Recognition and Awards. The awards recognize the outstanding contributions of CSM’s AUPE and MaPS staff and other staff who are externally funded and whose roles directly contribute to delivering our core mission. HBI Trainee Publication Awards

HBI Education offers a $400 award to trainees in recognition of their publication successes. All trainee first-authored papers published in brain and mental health peer-reviewed journals are eligible. HBI Postdoctoral & PhD Researcher of the Year Award

Pilot Research Fund Program (PFUN) $20,000
To be eligible for HBI/DCNS PFUN, the principal investigator must be either a full member of the HBI or a member of the Department of Clinical Neurosciences. To be eligible for HBI/Mathison PFUN, the principal investigator must be a member of the Mathison Centre.

Robertson Fund for Cerebral Palsy Research ($42,000)
