Diwali | Festival of Lights
Recently on October 31 - November 1 some members of our department celebrated Diwali!
We asked our department member Dr. Sangeeta Jain a few questions about the special occasion.
What is Diwali and what does Diwali mean to you?
Diwali also called Deepavali or Deepawali is known as the festival of lights and is celebrated by many different religions based in India and the surrounding region. During this festival, we are celebrating the triumph of knowledge over ignorance. I love the mythology around the story of Diwali and how each region and religion have their own version. Diwali to me means family, community and food!

|
How do you and your family celebrate? We decorate the house, make sidewalk chalk "rangoli"/colourful designs, and buy boxes of sweets. On the main day of Diwali we light tea lights or "diyas" and take them to every room in the house to welcome the goddess of wealth and prosperity. Sparklers always end the evening after a meal shared with family. How can DoP members support you and this occasion? In the days leading up to Diwali, I look forward to the tastes of the festival - slightly-too-sweet mithai (desserts), juicy pomegranate seeds and savory snacks (samosas, sev, and others). Don't feel shy to ask for a sample and to declare "Happy Diwali! |

Glucagon Intranasal (Baqsimi™) Nursing Memo
This communication is intended to inform nurses of an upcoming change within AHS pharmacies involving glucagon. Glucagon Injection will soon be replaced with Glucagon Intranasal as the 2nd line of treatment for severe hypoglycemia in patients 4 years and older. A summary of key information to support the transition is included below. Glucagon is used to treat severe hypoglycemia in patients without IV access, often in emergency situations, so we appreciate your assistance in sharing this product and practice change information with frontline nursing staff prior to the quickly approaching implementation date. Background:
- Glucagon 1 mg injection manufactured by Eli Lily and Paladin has been discontinued, with no current parenteral glucagon injectable alternative marketed in Canada. Health Canada has permitted the exceptional, temporary importation of US Glucagon Injection at a significantly higher cost and will be limited to use in patients under 4 years of age.
- Glucagon (Baqsimi™) nasal powder 3 mg has been added to the AHS Provincial Drug Formulary and will replace glucagon injectable upon implementation in patients 4 years and older.
Implementation Date: Glucagon (Baqsimi™) nasal powder 3 mg is expected to be available in AHS pharmacies starting the first week of December 2024. Education and Planning:
- Work is currently underway to update the AHS Treatment of Hypoglycemia- Adult Procedure and the AHS Treatment of Hypoglycemia- Pediatric Procedure, to reflect the changes of glucagon intranasal administration in patients 4 years and older.
- A ‘Baqsimi™ Administration- Quick Reference Guide’ has been developed to share with nursing staff, assist with education and/or to post on nursing units. This resource is also available on the Insulin Safety & Diabetes Management Insite page, under the ‘Hospital Education Posters & Resources’ section.
