2023 Innovation Award Results We are excited to announce the results of the 2023 Department of Pediatrics Innovation Award. The applicants submitted their ideas and were invited to present to a review panel and an audience during two virtual presentation sessions. The following is a list of the 7 successful applications, in alphabetical order of the project lead’s surname. The applications were awarded a total of $63,301. Drs. Belal Alshaikh and Adel Elsharkawy, “Exploring sucking efficiency and readiness in moderate and late preterm infants: Pilot study” (Project theme – Research. Awarded $10,000). Drs. Dana Boctor, Michelle Bailey and Genevieve de Caen, “Improving Rates of Pediatric Malnutrition Identification Among Hospitalized Patients” (Project theme – Clinical Improvement. Awarded $5,140). Drs. Michael Leaker and Kyle Canton, “Communication Training in Paediatric Haematology/Oncology: A National Needs Assessment” (Project theme – Education. Awarded $7,680 + $500 as Audience Choice winner). Dr. Sarah MacEachern, “Development and validation of an instrument to measure behaviours of concern in children with neurodevelopmental disorders” (Project theme – Research. Awarded $9,983). Dr. Leanne Morris and Kathryn Hynes, “Working together to do better: An Indigenous Child Health Needs Assessment to inform Clinical Curriculum Development” (Project theme – Indigenous health advocacy. Awarded $10,000 + $500 as Audience Choice winner). Drs. Amonpreet K. Sandhu, Leanne Morris and AnneMarie Dorland, “Change by Design: Re-envisioning the Pediatric Clinical Teaching Unit using Design Thinking” (Project theme – Education. Awarded $9,500). Dr. Jennifer Thull-Freedman, “Improving Care for Children with Low-Risk Fractures: A partnership among orthopedics, emergency departments, and primary care” (Project theme – Clinical Improvement. Awarded $9,998). Thank you to everyone who applied to the competition, to the review panel members, and to all those who attended the virtual presentations. It was wonderful to see the support for this competition from across the Department. Funding for the Award is provided by the Department of Pediatrics Innovation Award Endowment supported by the Alberta Children’s Hospital Foundation through community donors. We welcome your feedback on the 2023 competition format. Please reach out to Ashton Chugh if you would like to share your thoughts. We encourage all Department members to consider submitting their project ideas for the next competition at the end of 2024. |

Extra Surge Shifts to Support Inpatient Pediatrics
We are seeing another surge in respiratory patients which is straining capacity at the Alberta Children’s Hospital. In order to respond to the increased need, we have been given access to temporary funding for extra physician support (Temporary Emergency Redeployment of Physicians-TERP program - similar to the funding last year at $220/hour).

Deadline Extended for Clinical Promotions
We have extended the deadline to submit documentation for clinical promotions. If you are interested in clinical promotion this year, please send your CV and cover letter to Debbie Velsink by January 8, 2024.
Please note if we do not receive your cover letter and CV by this date, we won’t be able to make the deadlines set by the University and will have to wait until next year.

- Time Commitment: 1 meeting per month, always on Thursdays 4:30 pm - 6:00 pm. Review of Resident Review Documents prior to meetings approximately 3-4 times per year.
- Outcome: Fun and interesting discussions, resulting in real-time improvements to Clinical Rotations for our Pediatric Residents!

PGME Awards Subcommittee Members Needed
The Office of Postgraduate Medical Education (PGME) at the Cumming School of Medicine welcomes expressions of interest from residents, fellows, and senior educators/teaching faculty to join the PGME Awards Subcommittee.
|

|
The purpose of the PGME Awards Subcommittee is to facilitate the recognition and nomination of candidates for: Program Administrator Awards, Program Director Awards, Resident Awards, Fellow Awards, and Preceptor/Teaching Faculty Awards, as per individual award Terms of Reference or guidelines in the Office of Postgraduate Medical Education or other offices or units in the Cumming School of Medicine. The sub-committee will oversee:
- Invitation of award nominations
- Nomination and submission of potential award recipients to relevant bodies
- Selection of award recipients
- Delegation of a specific group to nominate and/or select award recipients.
- Documentation for external awards nominations
The scope of the Awards Subcommittee covers awards for all current or exiting Program Administrators, Program Directors, Residents, Fellows, or Preceptors. The committee will meet up to a maximum of three times per year. If you are interested in becoming a member, please send a 250-word paragraph explaining your interest in becoming a member on this committee including your current role in residency education to Crystal Boisselle by January 15, 2024. |

Upcoming EDI Sessions - January 2024 The following are upcoming sessions from UCalgary’s Office of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion: January 10, 9:00am-12:00pm MT: UCalgary’s Office of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion presents a foundational workshop on Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI): Foundations and Principles, available to UCalgary faculty, students and staff. Participants will be introduced to equity and inclusion in practice within the context of the university's mission and commitments and discuss applying EDI foundations and principles in their roles and their units' functions. Pediatric Fractures & Dislocation Course Thursday, January 18, 2024 | 7:30 AM – 4:45 PM | In-Person, Banff Park Lodge This course is designed for rural practitioners to learn the knowledge and skills necessary in the initial management of pediatric fractures. This course will include short didactic presentations addressing the correct diagnosis of pediatric fractures, and the physiologic differences between pediatric and adult fractures that affect management. Live demonstration with hands-on practice will focus on appropriate casting and splinting methods. Dr. Mamoru ‘Mo’ Watanabe Lectureship - Digital Health Today and Tomorrow Tuesday, January 23, 2024 | 12:30 PM – 4:00 PM | In-Person, Theatre 4, Health Sciences Centre, Foothills Campus Hosted by the W21C Research and Innovation Centre, this event honours Dr. Mamoru ‘Mo’ Watanabe, and his contributions in digital health and rural telemedicine, along with his promotion of health equity. During this event, we will formally introduce and showcase 'Health Everywhere', a new eHealth and mHealth hub created from a $6.3M Major Innovation Fund award from the Government of Alberta. 1st International Summit on Implantable BCI for Children with Complex Needs Monday, February 5, 2024 | 8:00 AM – 1:30 PM | Virtual (via Zoom) We are excited to announce the First International Summit on Implantable BCIs for Children with Complex Needs (iBCI-CCN 2024), which aims to outline the roadmap for the development of implantable BCI systems for children and young adults living with complex needs. The event will take place over two parts, with the first being an open half-day summit with talks and discussion from leaders across the world in spaces that can help set the stage for establishing a pathway forward for implantable BCI systems for children with complex needs. 2024 Pediatric Infectious Disease Conference Friday, February 9 - Sunday, February 11, 2024 | In-Person, Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel This course is designed for Pediatricians, Family Physicians, Residents and Allied Health Professionals. 2024 Mindful Practice in Medicine Core Workshop Wednesday, February 21 - Saturday, February 24, 2024 | In-Person, Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity This workshop was developed by physicians to help medical practitioners and educators respond to the erosion of joy in their work, while providing an experiential and interactive learning environment.
