New ACH PICC Team
Exciting news! The much-anticipated nurse led PICC team is launching at ACH.
This will take place in a graduated manner, starting with patients aged seven and up with supervision. As experience accumulates and staffing is increased, the scope of the program will increase.

Temporary PLC NICU Relocation
Please note that the NICU at the Peter Lougheed Centre is temporarily relocating from Unit 34 to Unit 33 to accommodate construction. This move is necessary to ensure the healthcare team can continue to provide safe, comfortable care to patients, their families, parents and guardians.

Are you a staff member who is interested in Medical Education, Clinical Curriculum, and contributing to improvement of the clinical rotations our Pediatric Residents rotate through? We are looking for a new member to join the Rotation Review Committee.

- Time Commitment: 1 meeting per month, always on Thursdays 4:30 pm - 6:00 pm. Review of Resident Review Documents prior to meetings approximately 3-4 times per year.
- Outcome: Fun and interesting discussions, resulting in real-time improvements to Clinical Rotations for our Pediatric Residents!

New this year! This award will recognize a resident physician who has demonstrated outstanding leadership skills during medical residency training.
One resident physician from the University of Calgary and one resident physician from the University of Alberta will each be awarded a prize of $250.
To nominate a resident physician for this award, complete the Resident Physician Leadership Award Form and send it to Ravneet Saran.

The Department of Pediatrics Administrative Wellness Council has set up a food drive for the Calgary Food Bank! The food drive will run from December 4-15, with boxes for drop offs in the Pediatrics back-office area (C4-400).

AHS Health System Access Drop-In Sessions
These drop-in sessions, hosted by Noopur Swadas (AHS Health System Access Advisor), are designed to offer consultation services for upcoming projects and assist researchers in navigating the AHS requirements for accessing the health system.
Drop-in sessions will be held once a month - the next one is on December 12 at 12:00 pm via Zoom. Click here to register in advance to attend.

Save the Date! Dr. Mamoru ‘Mo’ Watanabe Lectureship
Hosted by the W21C Research and Innovation Centre, this event on January 23, 2024 will recognize Dr. Watanabe’s contributions in digital health and rural telemedicine along with his promotion of health equity. They will also formally introduce and showcase "Health Everywhere", a new eHealth and mHealth hub created from a $6.3M Major Innovation Fund award from the Government of Alberta.

Current Innovation Award project holders are required to submit their annual progress reports by December 31, 2023. If you have Innovation Award funding, you should have received an email with information on how to submit your report.

New PCORI Grant - Comparative Effectiveness of MRD HCT and NT-DMT for Pediatric Sickle Cell Disease (WeDecide)
We are excited to share that Dr. Greg Guilcher and Dr. Fiona Schulte are co-investigators on a new $5.4M grant - the first grant from the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) that UCalgary has been awarded - comparing hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) to disease modifying therapy for sickle cell disease.

They aim to make the ACH hemoglobinopathy program a Globin Regional Network for Data and Discovery (GRNDaD) site, in collaboration with Dr. Michael Leaker and Dr. Gurpreet Singh. Click here for further details. Congratulations to all! |

Publication Spotlight
New research from Dr. Deborah Dewey, Dr. Gillian England-Mason, Dr. Gerry Giesbrecht, and Dr. Nicole Letourneau from the Department of Pediatrics together with collaborators from the APrON Study Team has found that maternal pre-pregnancy BMI and gestational weight gain are related to preschool children’s intelligence, language, memory, motor and executive functions.

Dr. Amuchou Soraisham
We are excited to share that Dr. Amuchou Soraisham has accepted the new Research Director role in the Section of Newborn Critical Care, effective April 1, 2024.
Dr. Soraisham brings significant research experience to this role, in addition to strong mentorship and administration skills, that will be an asset to building research capacity in the neonatology group.

Dr. Jaideep Kanungo
We would like to welcome Dr. Jaideep Kanungo to the Section of Newborn Critical Care, effective December 4, 2023. He will be offering clinical care primarily at RGH, but will also be extending his services to ACH, FMC, and NFC.
Dr. Kanungo was born and raised in Edmonton and completed his medical school at the University of Alberta in 2009.

He then completed his General Pediatrics residency at The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto in 2012, and a Neonatal/Perinatal fellowship in Toronto in 2015. Since 2015, Dr. Kanungo has been an attending neonatologist at Victoria General Hospital, where he has taken on the role of local CNN/EPIQ Site Investigator, developed the NeoSim simulation program, and was the chair of the Pediatric/Neonatal Quality Assurance Committee. He also serves as a reviewer for the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons for the Neonatal/Perinatal examination. Outside of the hospital, he is an avid amateur runner, ardent sports fan (Go Habs Go!), and enjoys spending time with his beloved Glenys and sweet son Luka. Welcome, Dr. Kanungo! |

Pediatric Fractures & Dislocation Course Thursday, January 18, 2024 | 7:30 AM – 4:45 PM | In-Person, Banff Park Lodge This course is designed for rural practitioners to learn the knowledge and skills necessary in the initial management of pediatric fractures. This course will include short didactic presentations addressing the correct diagnosis of pediatric fractures, and the physiologic differences between pediatric and adult fractures that affect management. Live demonstration with hands-on practice will focus on appropriate casting and splinting methods. 1st International Summit on Implantable BCI for Children with Complex Needs Monday, February 5, 2024 | 8:00 AM – 1:30 PM | Virtual (via Zoom) We are excited to announce the First International Summit on Implantable BCIs for Children with Complex Needs (iBCI-CCN 2024), which aims to outline the roadmap for the development of implantable BCI systems for children and young adults living with complex needs. The event will take place over two parts, with the first being an open half-day summit with talks and discussion from leaders across the world in spaces that can help set the stage for establishing a pathway forward for implantable BCI systems for children with complex needs.
