ii' taa'poh'to'p journey update

Dr. Dru Marshall, Provost and Vice-President (Academic) and Dr. Michael Hart, Vice-Provost (Indigenous Engagement) invite you to celebrate two years of ii' taa'poh'to'p, the University of Calgary’s Indigenous Strategy.

Join us for a pipe bag transfer ceremony to President Ed McCauley, get an update on the strategy and hear keynotes from Douglas White and Elizabeth Carlson on Indigenous and settler responsibilities as we look towards the future of reconciliation.

Douglas White (Kwul’a’sul’tun)

Douglas White is chair of the BC First Nations Justice Council, Director of the Centre for Pre-Confederation Treaties and Reconciliation at Vancouver Island University and a practicing lawyer and negotiator across the country for First Nations governments. He was appointed to the board of the federal Nanaimo Port Authority by the provincial government in July, 2019.

White is a co-chair of BC’s Provincial Advisory Committee for Indigenous and Specialized Courts and Related Initiatives. His Coast Salish name is Kwul’a’sul’tun, his Nuu-chah-nulth name is Tliishin. He is a member, former Chief, and current councillor and negotiator of the Snuneymuxw First Nation in Nanaimo, BC.

Elizabeth Carlson

Elizabeth Carlson’s scholarship focuses on the work of settlers in decolonization through the framework of living in Indigenous sovereignty. She is involved with the Stories of Decolonization Film Project, which aims to educate the Canadian public about the impacts of colonialism and the importance of decolonization.

Dr. Carlson is a research affiliate of the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation and she is also engaged in research on the roles of settlers in land return, land sharing, and supporting Indigenous land reclamation. She is currently learning to live in Indigenous sovereignty as a settler and treaty relative of the Robinson-Huron Treaty of 1850 while working as an Assistant Professor in the School of Social Work at Laurentian University.
