Cy Frank Legacy Lectureship 2023

The Cy Frank Legacy Lectureship honours and commemorates the late Dr. Cy Frank, an internationally acclaimed visionary who championed the application of research to create solutions for patients. The lectureship showcases individuals who reflect this passion and commitment to health innovation.

The Cy Frank Legacy Lectureship is supported by the McCaig Institute for Bone and Joint Health, the Cumming School of Medicine, University of Calgary Alumni Relations and Alberta Innovates.

This year we are excited to welcome Dr. Walter Herzog - Professor in Kinesiology, Engineering, Medicine and Veterinary Medicine at the University of Calgary, the Director of the Human Performance Lab, Canada Research Chair in Molecular and Cellular Biomechanics (2001-2022) and the Nigg Chair for Mobility and Longevity (2021-2026).

Lecture title:

Harnessing innovative preclinical models to advance osteoarthritis research and treatment

Dr. Walter Herzog's presentation will focus on three decades of pre-clinical models of knee joint osteoarthritis (OA): (i) post-traumatic OA, muscle weakness induced OA and obesity/metabolic syndrome associated OA. Much of Dr. Herzog's work has been guided and inspired by Dr. Cy Frank, whose enormous influence on Herzog's scientific career will be discussed. Dr. Herzog will also attempt to identify how these pre-clinical findings may inform and be relevant for clinical applications, specifically for patients suffering from mild to moderate knee joint OA.
