SPP Forum: Economic
Self-Determination in Action:
Lessons from Taza

Join us for a special School of Public Policy Forum event with Bryce Starlight, Vice President, Business Development at Taza Development Corp to discuss Economic Self-Determination in Action: Lessons from Taza.

Economic self-determination is a cornerstone of Indigenous prosperity but achieving it requires more than just a vision: it demands clarity, trust, flexibility and collaboration. This session examines Taza Development as a case study in building strong partnerships between Indigenous communities and the broader development and financing sectors.

The discussion will cover three key principles:

  1. How genuine relationships between partners are essential to progressing economic self-determination;
  2. Why flexibility of process and clarity of economic outcomes need to be understood by all involved;
  3. Aligning economic development with the long-term goals of the community.

Participants will gain insight into how transparency in outcomes and alignment of objectives can create a foundation for sustainable growth. By understanding these principles, future leaders can help advance projects that respect Indigenous sovereignty while meeting the expectations of investors and partners.

Forum is a weekly interdisciplinary discussion hosted by the School of Public Policy, that combines intellectual exploration, issue discussions and the exchange of ideas. Each week, graduate students, faculty, alumni, and leaders from across sectors come together over a lunch hour to engage with the ideas and challenges shaping our world.

We invite you to be part of the dialogue.
