Science in the Cinema Presents: iRobot
Hosted by the University of Calgary's Cumming School of Medicine (CSM), Science in the Cinema brings together science and popular culture in a fun and engaging way.
iRobot explores how embedded artificial intelligence may become in our everyday lives by 2035. The film imagines a future where intelligent machines operate under strict ethical rules—until those rules are put to the test. Though released in 2004, the movie raises timely questions about trust, responsibility, and how much decision-making we should delegate to AI, particularly in healthcare.
Following the screening, a facilitated fireside chat will explore the film’s relevance to contemporary AI in health and society, examining ethics, autonomy, accountability, and the continued role of human judgment and compassionate care. The event is open to both public and academic audiences.
