This Schulich Connects session explores how resilient materials, sustainable design practices, and innovative infrastructure strategies can strengthen above-ground urban systems for the future.

Meet our host and moderator:

Dr. Bob Brennan, PhD
Vice-Dean, Schulich School of Engineering

Dr. Brennan is currently a professor in the Department of Mechanical and Manufacturing engineering. He received both his BSc and PhD degrees in mechanical engineering from the University of Calgary and has held several leadership roles within Schulich since joining the faculty. Dr. Brennan has contributed extensively to research throughout his career and previously held the NSERC Spartan Controls / Suncor Energy Chair in Design Engineering Education. Dr. Brennan is the recipient of numerous awards and has been recognized as a Fellow of Engineers Canada.

Dr. Alberto Bezama
Associate Dean of Sustainability, Schulich School of Engineering

Dr. Bezama has over 15 years of experience in contaminated site management, waste management, and cleaner production, as well as more than 10 years in the field of sustainability assessment. He holds a degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Concepción (Chile) and earned his PhD at the Institute for Waste Management and Technology at the University of Leoben (Austria). Since May 2025, he holds the position of Full Professor and Associate Dean (Sustainability) at the Schulich School of Engineering, where he leads the Sustainable Systems Engineering program.
