Science in the Cinema presents Wildcat

Hosted by the University of Calgary's Cumming School of Medicine (CSM), Science in the Cinema brings together science and popular culture in a fun and engaging way.

Biopic, Wildcat, follows Southern Gothic American author Flannery O’Connor as she struggles to publish her first novel while also facing a lupus diagnosis.

Following the film, join us as panelists from the McCaig Institute for Bone and Joint Health discuss and answer questions about living with rheumatological diseases, modern lupus treatment options, and novel advances in treatment and care, including AI, biomarkers, and precision medicine.

Presented by the University of Calgary McCaig Institute for Bone and Joint Health, hosted in partnership with the Calgary Public Library.

MEET THE SPEAKERS  
Dr. Cheryl Barnabe, MD, MSc, FRCPC, is a Professor in the Departments of Medicine and Community Health Sciences, Cumming School of Medicine, University of Calgary. She is the Director for the McCaig Institute for Bone and Joint Health. She is a Canada Research Chair in Rheumatoid Arthritis and Autoimmune Diseases, and the Arthur JE Child Chair in Rheumatology Research. Her research program focusses on equity in health service delivery and arthritis outcomes, most specifically for Indigenous populations in Canada.

Dr. Claire Barber, MD, PhD, FRCPC, an Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Calgary, specializes in rheumatology with a focus on inflammatory arthritis. Her research is dedicated to enhancing the quality of care for individuals with inflammatory arthritis, collaborating with national and international organizations to develop and validate quality measures in rheumatology. Dr. Barber has played a key role in creating Canada’s first national system-level performance measures for inflammatory arthritis, helping to identify care gaps and advocate for improved treatment models. She also leads initiatives to develop patient-centered quality frameworks and continuous reporting strategies to improve clinic performance and patient outcomes.

Dr. Megan Barber, MD, PhD, FRCPC, is a rheumatologist in the Cumming School of Medicine in the Division of Rheumatology. She is Associate Director of Clinical Research and Clinical Trials at the Lupus Centre of Excellence. She completed an advanced lupus fellowship in 2021. Her research interests include antiphospholipid syndrome and novel lupus therapeutics.

Dr. May Choi, MD, MPH, FRCPC, is a rheumatologist and clinician scientist at the Cumming School of Medicine, University of Calgary, focusing on biomarker discovery and validation to predict and prevent autoimmune rheumatic diseases. With a background in Epidemiology from Harvard University and specialized training in lupus at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Dr. Choi serves as the Associate Director of both MitogenDx Laboratory and the University of Calgary Lupus Centre of Excellence. Her work is supported by several prestigious awards, including the Lupus Foundation of America Gary S. Gilkeson Career Development Award.
