From politicians using social media to speak directly to constituents to questions about the legitimacy of elections, the impacts are even being felt on democracy. Join us for Schulich Connects in April, How Technology is Changing Democracy, to hear more about whether technology is improving or undermining democracy, and the role that engineers will play in future advancements.

- Dr. Bill Rosehart
Dean, Schulich School of Engineering
For over 20 years, Bill Rosehart has been a passionate advocate for engineering education and research. Rosehart is registered as a Professional Engineer through APEGA and was a founding member of the Canadian Engineering Education Association (CEEA). He has also been inducted as Fellow into the Canadian Academy of Engineering.
Meet our panelists:
- Dr. Lisa Young
Professor, Political Science, University of Calgary
Dr. Young has published extensively in the field of Canadian politics, authoring/co-authoring several books, including Rebuilding Canadian Party Politics, Feminists and Party Politics, and Advocacy Groups. Her current research projects focus on Alberta politics, political and party finance, and graduate education in the social sciences and humanities. Dr. Young appears frequently in the media commenting on Alberta and Canadian politics. From 2011 to 2018, she served as Vice-Provost and Dean of Graduate Studies at the University of Calgary. - Dr. Ben Tan
Assistant Professor, Schulich School of Engineering, Department of Electrical and Software Engineering
Dr. Benjamin Tan is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical and Software Engineering at The University of Calgary. His research work at present focuses on improving the security of computer systems at the hardware level and understanding the implications of emerging machine learning techniques on the IC supply chain and life cycle. Prior to joining the University of Calgary, Tan was a Research Assistant Professor at New York University with the Center for Cybersecurity. - Zain Velji

Zain brings a decade of experience in political, business, and non-profit communications, as well as marketing and engagement. He is a frequent public speaker and regular political commentator who appears on CBC radio and television and provides federal election coverage for CTV and Bell Media. Zain is also the host of the award-winning podcast The Strategists, where he dissects political strategy and public affairs issues of the day and the host of the Zain Velji show on Newstalk 1010.
