Featured Speakers:

Dr. Valerie Taylor, MD, PhD
Dr. Taylor is a professor and head of the Department of Psychiatry at the CSM. Her academic focus includes obesity, metabolic syndrome and mental health. She is interested in the overlap between obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and mental illness, the impact of pharmacotherapy on weight and behaviour, and the role of the microbiome. Prior to arriving in Calgary she was the chief of Psychiatry at Women’s College Hospital and the Center for Addiction and Mental Health in Toronto. She has over 120 peer reviewed publications and funding from a variety of national and international funding agencies.

Dr. Alex McGirr, MD, PhD
Dr. McGirr was recruited to the University of Calgary in 2017 as an emerging leader in neurostimulation and mood disorders. He is an assistant professor in the Department of Psychiatry. Dr. McGirr is a graduate of the Faculty of Medicine, Department of Psychiatry at the University of British Columbia and a recipient of the prestigious Vanier Scholarship from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research. His primary research interest focuses on using non-invasive brain stimulation in humans and animal models to better understand neural changes in mood disorders, and depressive disorders in particular.

Dr. Jean Addington, PhD
Dr. Addington is a leading researcher in the early detection and prevention of psychosis, which often strikes young adults. She is a professor in the Department of Psychiatry and holds the Novartis Chair for Schizophrenia Research at the university. She was named a Clarative Analytics highly cited researcher in 2018, her third time reciving the honour recognizing exceptional performance by being in the top one per cent of cited researchers in their field and publication year.
