Cities of the Future: Are Resilient Cities Sustainable?

Around the world, cities of the future will encounter increased challenges from climate change and increased severe weather events. They will also face growing pressures by the 5 billion people projected to live in urban areas by 2030. This rapid urban growth and high concentration of people and assets, makes cities increasingly vulnerable. The UN estimates by 2030, climate change alone could force up to 77 million people into poverty. Failure to invest in urban resilience can have significantly adverse impacts on the urban poor.

A resilient city bounces back from physical, social and economic challenges, unharmed, through large financial and infrastructure inputs.  A sustainable city balances consumption with the carrying capacity of our planet. But what if, as our cities become more resilient, they also become less sustainable?
