Your Voice: Summary Results of Well Doc Alberta Physician Wellness Survey
In February 2022, a short survey was sent to all members of the Department of Pediatrics from Well Doc Alberta. The questions were analyzed using a hybrid approach of inductive and deductive thematic analysis to identify themes.

Help Lead Wellness in the Department of Pediatrics: Join Our Physician Wellness Task Force!
We are looking to recruit wellness champions across the Department of Pediatrics to join our Physician Wellness Task Force! Please join the Co-Chairs of the Task Force, Dr. Natalie Forbes and Cecilia Lee, as we dynamically move forward into 2024 with Physician Wellness initiatives.

As a member of this team, you will help oversee the development and implementation of Wellness programs and projects within the Department of Pediatrics to promote the wellbeing of its members. Meetings are held once per month (first Wednesday of the month at noon). Interested in joining or need more information? Educator of the Month: October 2023
We are excited to highlight this month's Educator of the Month - Dr. Mary Ann Thomas!
Dr. Thomas currently holds the positions of interim RCPSC Medical Genetics and Genomics Residency Program Director and Chair of its Residency Program Committee, and is a member (and past Chair) of the Medical Genetics and Genomics competence committee.

|
She is also a member of the CCMG (Canadian College of Medical Geneticists) Genetic and Genomic Diagnostics (Lab) fellow’s training committee in Calgary. Nationally, she is the Chair-elect for the RCPSC Medical Genetics and Genomics Specialty committee (will transition to Chair this July), and is a member of the CCMG Education, Ethics and Public Policy committee and CCMG working group for the Genetic and Genomic Diagnostics fellowship. We recently interviewed Dr. Thomas about her work in medical education - an excerpt from our discussion is below. In the words of her colleagues, Dr. Thomas has been deeply involved in residency education for many years and takes a true interest in the wellbeing and progress of residents as a compassionate teacher, mentor and physician. A big thank you to Dr. Thomas for all that you do! |

Each recipient was given a certificate and a Clinical Teacher of Excellence pin. This is a new recognition started this year by PGME with a focus to recognize clinical teaching in PGME. Awards are given out based on both a high number of teaching evaluations received and high teaching assessment scores.

Black Physicians of Canada Mentorship Award
Dr. Nicole Johnson has been selected as the first ever recipient of the Black Physicians of Canada Mentorship Award for her remarkable contributions towards mentorship for the Black medical community! Dr. Johnson's commitment to mentorship has had a profound impact that extends throughout the province.

As the founder and key organizer of the Black Physician Association of Alberta's student mentorship program, she has played a pivotal role in fostering mentorship opportunities for Black medical students. By organizing mentor-mentee events and implementing a robust pairing system, she has ensured that every interested Black medical student in Alberta has access to a Black mentor. Dr. Johnson's efforts have created a nurturing environment where aspiring physicians receive comprehensive support and life advice, thanks to her personal mentorship. Her collaboration with the students of Calgary BMSA (Black Medical Students’ Association) and the Calgary Undergraduate Medical Office has yielded groundbreaking advocacy initiatives, notably in the area of better representation of BIPOC populations in the medical curriculum. Congratulations, Dr. Johnson! |

CMV Canada’s Healthcare Leadership Award
Pediatric Infectious Disease Specialist Dr. Jessica Dunn was the recent recipient of CMV Canada’s Healthcare Leadership Award for her remarkable contributions to the prevention of congenital cytomegalovirus (CMV) infections and the enhancement of the quality of life and care for those affected in Canada.
