Learn about World Sepsis Day
September 13 is World Sepsis Day! To raise awareness, the Calgary Tower and Peace Bridge will light up pink. Take a picture of the World Sepsis Day lights and send it to [email protected]. The best picture will be awarded!

Connect Care Drop-In Sessions
Drop-in virtual support will be available this fall for users (i.e. Physicians, NPs, Fellows, Residents, Medical Learners, Clinical Assistants, Physician Assistants) to help optimize usage of Connect Care. This is meant to help users gain skills in areas they identify as troublesome, providing tools to optimize workflow while helping them become more comfortable and efficient in the system.

Recruiting for Course 6
Course 6 (Pediatrics and Obstetrics/Gynecology) is the second year course for undergraduate medical students at the Cumming School of Medicine. This course serves as their introduction to pediatrics and is the last course they attend before they leave the classroom and join clinical work as clerks. This year, the course will run from September-December, 2023.

We are currently recruiting enthusiastic clinical preceptors to teach Small Group (case-based classroom teaching) and Clinical Core (patient centered clinical skills learning). Department of Pediatrics Innovation Award
The Department of Pediatrics is thrilled to announce the return of the Innovation Award.
For 2023, individuals or teams will pitch project ideas that can be completed for up to $10,000. The intent of the award is to provide funds to support groups engaged in small, impactful, innovative projects.
|
|
|
Project Leads and their teams will submit a short project outline. The projects will be screened for eligibility and alignment with key themes. Those selected to pitch their project will have 6 weeks to prepare a 5-10 minute presentation. All members of the Department and project stakeholders are encouraged to attend the presentations. Projects will be assessed by a review panel comprised of members of the Department of Pediatrics leadership and faculty/physician members of the Department. Competition deadlines:
- Project outline due: October 10, 2023
- Notice of presentation: Week of October 16, 2023
- Presentations (in-person): November 29 and December 6, 2023 (several time slots will be available)
- Results announced: Week of December 11, 2023

Storage of Research Records The University of Calgary moved all offsite storage boxes from Iron Mountain to a University-owned facility called the High Density Library (HDL), located at the Spy Hill campus. This move also included research-related materials. The HDL can accommodate research materials and costs are billed at the beginning of archiving to avoid long-term costs. New Job Opening Request Form Human Resources and Finance have a developed a new job opening request (JOR) form that includes a new guided tool to assist staff in submitting the JOR. Some of the new features of the JOR include:
- Form updates based on answers to key questions, so initiators see only what is relevant for their request
- Job profile evaluation process incorporated into the form for AUPE and MaPS roles
- Real-time estimation tool for project funded roles
- Ability to attach a job ad directly into the form for academic positions
- New summary page to support approvals

Publication Spotlight
A new article has been published in Paediatrics & Child Health, the official journal of the Canadian Paediatric Society. This is a collaborative study from the University of Calgary, Mount Royal University and the University of Alberta, led under the supervision of Dr. Abhay Lodha:

This provincial-based study showed that during the COVID-19 lockdown period, there was a decrease in moderate and increase in extremely preterm birth rates in Alberta. However, the rates of very preterm and late preterm birth rates remained unimpacted. Congratulations on your publication, team! |

Nicole Romanow
We would like to say a big thank you to Nicole Romanow, who has stepped down as Manager, Child Health Research with the Department of Pediatrics to pursue a new opportunity.
Nicole has covered the portfolio for the Deputy Head, Research over the past couple years and has made significant contributions in supporting and advancing research in the Department during that time. We are incredibly grateful for her outstanding leadership in this role, and we wish her all the best in her future endeavours!
