Idea Igniters: Studies in Space

Explore the path to becoming an astronaut and how space weather impacts earth

Many people dream about travelling to space, but what does it take to actually get there? Dr. Robert Thirsk, Chancellor of the University of Calgary and former astronaut discusses his journey to becoming a member of Canada’s first astronaut class. From his childhood fascination to holding the Canadian record for the longest time spent in space, Dr. Thirsk has a great deal of insight for people who share the common dream of flying really high.

With all four seasons often hitting Calgary in a single day we’re no stranger to weather. But what about when it’s out of this world? Emma Spanswick, adjunct assistant professor of physics and astronomy at the University of Calgary, will share her research on how phenomena like the aurora and other space weather can impact our technology, our natural system and our climate.

The evening will be hosted by Wesley Ernst, University of Calgary Senate member and support technician for the physics and astronomy department. In both his work and personal life Wesley has dedicated his time to community projects that help spark excitement around physics, including organizing the University's first ever physics summer camp.
